abstract = "The accurate use of satellite images for mapping and environmental
monitoring requires the image transformation to ground reflectance
through atmospheric correction. The most difficult parameter to
obtain for the atmospheric correction is the horizontal
visibility. The objective of this paper is to present the
comparison of atmospheric correction of OLI Landsat 8 images using
horizontal visibility from field inspection and from airport data.
OLI images were acquired from three dates, 02/26/2014, 02/10/2014,
10/11/2015 and 04/20/2016 and field work was conducted at the same
time of satellite overpass and horizontal visibility was obtained
by observing target at different distances and recording the
maximum distance at which targets could be identifiable by visual
inspection. Horizontal visibility was also downloaded from the
Gale{\~a}o airport data, to which the obtained values were 10km
as this is the maximum value recorded for this airport.
Atmospheric correction was carried out for the two sources of
horizontal visibility using the Atmcor4OLI program, adapted
through the 6S code. The comparison between the two methods was
through graphs of surface and apparent reflectance for typical
targets and by a statistic test. The results show that the
atmospheric correction is necessary to analyze the spectral
response of the targets. The visibility of the airport yield
surface reflectance different from the correction with field
obtained data, mainly for clear atmospheres, while for visibility
close to 10km the difference was smaller. It is concluded that an
accurate source of horizontal visibility is key for obtaining
                         correct surface reflectance values.",
